That really depend on the age. Puppies need about 15 - 20 hours of sleep a day! Older dogs will do it out of exausion while other dogs maybe bored, sleepy, or (when hot) suffering from a form of heat stroke. Some breeds do it because of their "lazy" nature. Some do this when they are sick, but it is usually accompionied by whining and other symptoms.
Seeing your dog's vet. would probably be of more help ^^;
