This could be caused by many things which are beyond the average users ability to correct. But there are a couple things you can try which may get you going again.

Re-seat the RAM. Laptops live a rough life, they tend to get banged around a bit. It is not uncommon for one of the systems RAM sticks to get jostled loose. A loose RAM stick can have all sorts of odd effects on your system, including random restarts. With the system unplugged & battery removed, take off the panel which covers the RAM sticks, and remove the RAM & put it right back in.

You'd be surprised how often that works.

Your OS may be corrupted. The only good way to test this is to load another OS. You can wipe the hard disk & reinstall your current OS, or you can download one of the many Linux distros which are able to boot from CD (this is called a "live CD"). Ubuntu is a very good distro for this purpose.

If it isn't one of those two things, you've got bigger fish to fry & should take it to a professional.

This could be any of a dozen different things... But here's some easy stuff you can try yourself before bringing in the professionals.

1. It could be a loose RAM stick. With the machine turned off, unplugged, and battery removed, open up the panel (usually on the bottom) for adding RAM, and re-seat your ram (remove it & then reinsert it.) Additionally, if there are two sticks of RAM in there, try booting the machine with just one, and then just the other to see if either of them have gone bad.

2. It could be something in your OS or hard disk has gone wonky. To check, download & burn any Linux distribution that has a "live" CD. A live CD is a CD which allows you to load & use an operating system without having to install it.

3. It could be overheating. Blow all the dust out of all the ventilation slots. If possible, ensure that the CPU heatsink has not worked loose.

Hope that helps.

Why laptop does not shutdown after passing the shutdown command?

If you close the lid of the laptop before it has finished, it will suspend all activity and wait for you to open it again before proceeding. Otherwise you may be accidentally putting it into hibernate or sleep modes, or restarting it.
