The normal one-tonne wagon was drawn by horses or donkeys. Travelling at about 5 km per hour, and 8 kg per day for each animal, a significant part the contents of the wagon would be consumed by the team of draught animals over prolonged distances, so that it was not economic other than for the most valuable cargoes. So sea trade was preferred for bulk commodities. As an example later in Rome, foodstuffs were brought in from Italy only about as far as 100 km. The bulk was shipped from Egypt, North Africa and Sicily, which was more affordable.
