because there are certain people in this world who do not smoke and have to put up with inconsiderate people blowing smoke in their face in every direction. to those who dont smoke - we have made the concious decision to keep ourselves healthy. Yet when the smokes come along and smoke around us, we are PASSIVELY smoking, which is just as bad as normal smoking, if not, worse because the smoke has already been through someone else's system. Its about time that law was passed!

Smoking in public places should be banned because it constitutes a serious health hazard to people around the person that is smoking without their knowing it.
Well in restaurants, there is a good reason. Some people are allergic to smoke. Some restaurants have a smoking and non-smoking section. Whenever it is banned, it is banned for public health.

It is unhealthy and linked to cancer and other diseases, as well as being REVOLTING.

First, The problem with banning smoking everywhere is that those who do not smoke don't have any sympathy about the idea that smoking is an addiction. They shouldn't have much to say about it because they have never been in those shoes. First off, smoking may or may not cause someone to die. People who smoke are not guaranteed to die from it nor guaranteed to have major health problems from it, it's just more probable that they will. Not even half of those who smoke will die from it. Try to stay in touch with that.

Second, there are benefits to smoking. It helps round the edges in life, just like any other drug that modifies chemicals in our bodies. It's helps those with ADHD, Alzheimer disease, and Parkinson disease. Although there are more detriments than benefits, anyone one who tells you there is no benefits from smoking is closed minded and doesn't do their research on the subject.

Third, in a society where individual choices are respected, governments should never interfere with personal decisions. This is a dangerous place to be playing with governing policies because it squeezes freedom that allows people to express them selves as they desire to. In the same essence, a government could force everyone to cater to smokers. How would people like to own their own business and be forced by law to allow smokers to come in and smoke up their business? It goes both ways! A business should not be forced to cater one way or the other, but should be able to decide for themselves who they wish to cater to.

Fourth, the only exception to the fore mentioned ideas is an extreme crisis situation. A lot of health organizations are trying to make smoke exposure a crisis, but the science just doesn't support it. It's a shame to see these respected firms advertise such far fetched ideas. Honestly I didn't really know how many lies could be published, until I looked into this particular debate. It's kinda funny, deep down inside ourselves we all know from life experience and seeing others who smoke, that not everyone dies from it, and those exposed are not dying from it either. Why do we listen to others who contradict what we see with our own eyes everyday? We should know better.

Here's the science cases on second hand smoke exposure that you will never see publicly published. Most of these organizations who do science studies on the effects find a limited to absolutely no connection between exposure and health concerns but then turn around and do a press release saying that there is no doubt that it does.

The 1993 Environmental Protection Agencies linking health concerns to second hand smoke was thrown out by a district judge for cherry-picking their information, even with the bias they could only conclude:

"The studies showed that for any given nonsmoker, the lifetime risk of getting lung cancer remains small: 4 to 5 in 1000 ordinarily, and 6 to 7 in 1000 if he or she has been living with a smoking spouse."

That's 100% exposure indoors over a lifetime.

BMJ did the longest most in depth study and concluded:

"Conclusions The results do not support a causal relation between environmental tobacco smoke and tobacco related mortality, although they do not rule out a small effect. The association between exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and coronary Heart disease and lung cancer may be considerably weaker than generally believed."

The smoke campaigns also like to bring up the idea that it's for the safety of the workers, This shows waitresses in smoke filled bars are exposed to only a 5th of what the EPA considers hazardous.

So as you can see the science behind the health concerns of others over second hand smoke are practically impossible to even been seen in case studies, let along be justification enough to pass any bans. This information needs to be shared with the world, so the lies from the campaigns don't influence people to be vote stupidly. Like the quotes goes, "If you hear a lie long enough, eventually it becomes the truth."
It is unhealthy and linked to cancer and other diseases, as well as being REVOLTING.

Smoking is not allowed in many public places because many people think that it is a horrible habit. Especially with nonsmokers, second-hand smoking is worried about. Many people do not like the smell of smoke and do not want to be around those who smoke or smell of it. Tests have shown that smoking causes more than 440,000 American deaths each year and is the most common cause of death worldwide. 3,000 nonsmoking adults die of diseases caused by exposure to second hand smoke every year. One major reason is because smoking has been proven to cause disease and other impediments on peoples lives.

Smokers are at a higher risk of getting cancer. Carcinogen present in tobacco smoke causes cancer of lungs, mouth, throat and gullet. About 90% of lung cancer cases are because of smoking. Smokers can also develop other types of cancers such as bladder cancer, pancreatic cancer, cancer of kidneys and esophagus cancer. Female smokers are at a greater risk of Cervical cancer. Cardiovascular diseases are the diseases of heart, blood vessels of the heart and blood vessels including arteries and veins. It is a major cause of death due to smoking. Nicotine present in tobacco increases the cholesterol levels in the blood. Cholesterol and other fats get deposited in the arteries, which causes hardening of arteries. The arteries become narrow, rigid or blocked. Due to atherosclerosis (narrowing of arteries), blood clots are formed, which increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Common cardiovascular diseases found in smokers are coronary thrombosis, cerebral thrombosis, coronary heart diseases, blockage in the legs (peripheral vascular disease) and cerebrovascular diseases such as stroke. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a group of health conditions, which blocks airflow and causes difficulty in breathing. It causes health problems such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Emphysema is breathlessness that is caused by damage to alveoli (air sacs). Chronic bronchitis causes frequent coughing with a lot of mucus. Smoking is responsible for about 80% of COPD cases. Smoking increases the rate of decline in lung function three times the usual rate. Breathlessness starts due to decrease in lung function. Other Conditions Caused by Smoking: * The chemicals present in tobacco damage the lining of blood vessels and affect the levels of fats in the bloodstream. It increases the risk of atheroma, which is the main cause of heart disease, stroke and aneurysms. * Smoking affects your oral health. It can stain your teeth and gums. Smoking can give rise to various health problems of gums and teeth, such as swollen gums, loose teeth and bad breath. * Smoking causes acid taste in the mouth. It can increase the risk of developing mouth ulcers. * Smoking can give rise to various sexual problems. Couples addicted to smoking are likely to face fertility problems. * Smoking increases the risk of high blood pressure, which is a risk factor for stroke and heart attacks. * Smoking worsens asthma by increasing the inflammation of airways. * Smoking can cause early aging. Due to smoking, the blood supply to the skin is reduced. There is decrease in the levels of vitamin A. Hence, smokers have paler skin and more wrinkles. * Heavy smoking causes macular degeneration, which results in gradual loss of eyesight. Smokers are at a higher risk for cataract. * Some other conditions caused by smoking are chest infections, diabetic retinopathy, tuberculosis, multiple sclerosis and Crohn's disease.

Pregnancy is also affected by smoking. Women who smoke during pregnancy can slow down the baby's growth by reducing the amount of oxygen and increasing the amount of carbon monoxide that the baby receives during a critical time when its brain and nervous system are developing. Smoking while pregnant increases the chances of spontaneous abortions (miscarriages) stillbirths and premature labor. Women who smoke have higher risks of giving birth to babies with birth defects or abnormalities. Infants born to mothers who smoke are more likely to develop colds, bronchitis, and other respiratory diseases such as asthma. The odds of developing asthma are twice as high among children whose mothers smoke more than 10 cigarettes a day. Mothers who smoke can pass nicotine to their children through breast milk. This can also occur with being in contact with smoke, even though the pregnant women are not smoking themselves.

Because, some people have an allergy to cigarette smoke, and if they were to inhale the smoke, it could cause a serious health issues, some people have Asthma and the smoke could send them into a fatal attack. The smoke from cigarettes is a health concern in general, the nicotine is only addictive and doesnt have too many health concerns. Those attending restaurants are going out to eat for a nice dinner (in most cases), not to go and become; sick, receive second hand smoke, get lung cancer, or die. But, if you were to talk to the manager, I am sure there is a designated area in the back where you can go and have a smoke, possibly with the other waiters who work there?

Why do all public places have to be smoke free?

Public places are required to be smoke free by law in many states because of the newly discovered effects of second hand smoke on health. Whenever you smoke around others, the second hand smoke (smoke that you do not inhale or smoke that you exhale) can be inhaled by others. This smoke is actually more dangerous to the lungs. Therefore, when you smoke around others, you are not only endangering your own health, but theirs as well. Many states have decided that in public places, every person has the right to their health, and so smoking has been outlawed in these areas.
