Best Answer

because they are unnecessary and would cause way too much destruction then is required against our current enemies

Answer

one reason is because particularly after the cold war the US reduced its stockpile of atomic and nuclear weaponry in a deal with the russians.

Answer

Because, after their use on Japan, the full implications of nuclear weapon usage became apparent to everyone. Thus, it was realized that nuclear weapons AREN'T a military weapon: they cause far to much indiscriminate destruction, and use against an opponent likewise equipped guaranties that the opponent will use them on friendly forces, against which there is NO defense. That is, use of nuclear weapons by friendly forces guaranties that BOTH enemy and friendly forces die in short order. They're suicidal to use for military purposes.

Thus, even the smallest nuclear weapon is a political weapon, and has very little practical military application. Using a nuke is a political (not military) statement, and, as such, belongs in the realm of international relations (and power politics).

Furthermore, the massive increase in destructive power available with the advent of the hydrogen bomb meant that even limited use of them threatened civilization as a whole (though, not, as some doomsayers would have it, the extinction of the human species). Use of a nuclear weapon was justifiably seen as a horrible act, and one which no civilized country could countenance, even against an opponent who could not retaliate in kind. For, if a country chose to use nuclear weapons against a defenseless foe, other nuclear-equipped countries would consider that aggressor to be dangerously unstable, and attack it out of pre-emptive self defense (use of nuclear weapons branded the using country as a rabid dog, and something that would have to be put down immediately, if the global community was to continue to exist).

In short, we have never used nukes after Japan because they simply are too powerful, too uncontrollable, and too indiscriminate in their effects. They're used solely as a weapon of last resort - horded against the possibility that someone less stable will use one, and force the immediate destruction of that foe lest the nuclear genie end civilization.

After the two bombs were dropped (one on Hiroshima) and one on (Nagasaki) the world was shocked to see the devastation and even today the genetic factors that the radiation caused the people of Japan can still show up in the gene pool. Many people considered this over-kill and thought fire bombs would have been just as effective. The Atomic bombs dropped on both Japanese cities was a good warning to Russia as to what the U.S. was capable of doing.
