How to replace a headlamp depends on the year of your Celebrity For a Celebrity from 1982 to 1986: 1. Remove the headlight door. 2. Take out the four screws that hold the headlight retainer in place. 3. Pull the sealed beam headlight out far enough to unplug the connector. Reverse the steps to put in a new sealed beam headlight. For 1987 through 1990: 1. Reach behind the composite headlight and give the appropriate socket slight twist to unlock it. The socket will come out of the headlight unit. 2. Unplug the old halogen bulb, plug in a new bulb. 3. Put the socket back in place and twist to lock it in.
You have to pull the headlight assembly out. There is a lever on the inside of the car around the assembly that you lift (rotate) to unlock the assembly. If there's a lot of road dirt up there it can stick. Then you can pull the headlight out. Be carefull, on one side there's an additional "lock" that you have to press to release the lever. I found out the hard way when I snapped the lever off. After changing the bulb, there are two, one high and one low beam, installation is the reverse.
See http://www.cindyli.com/index.php/site/comments/vw_beetle_headlight_replacement/ remember to depress the small release button next to the slider lock (at least this is how it works on a 2004. good luck!
On the top of each headlight assembly, you will see two small semi-circular tabs. Pull these tabs upwards - you may have to use a wrench or screwdriver to put some force into it, as they tend to get stuck with road salt and grime. Once they move upwards, about 3/4 inch or so, the headlight assembly will release. You can then pull the headlight assembly forward and out of the truck. It will be attached only by the wires. Rotate the lightbulb assembly counter clockwise, and the bulb will come out. Replace the bulb, put it back into the headlight assembly, and rotate it clockwise to lock it in. Replace the headlight assembly, making sure the three screw/nuts are in the locking tabs correctly. While pushing the headlight assembly inwards, press the two locking tabs back down. This will lock the headlight assembly back into the truck, and realign the headlight, so that it does not have to be aimed again.
Off the Lock was created on 1989-05-21.

The headlight assembly (aka the headlight bucket) is removable by releasing the lock tabs behind the assembly. Once the assembly is wiggled out in the open you can easily replace the bulbs.
Remove air intake duct to gain access to the back of the headlight housing then press lock release and unplug the electrical connector, rotate the bulb assembly counterclockwise and withdraw it from the headlight housing. When reassembling be careful not to touch the glass part of the bulb, if you do clean with alcohol and allow to dry.
