There were a series of protests by Chinese students and "intellectuals" from April 15th to June 4th 1989, as they believed that Deng Xiaoping's reforms of 1978 hadn't gone far enough, & that China needed to reform its political system. This was because previous reforms had only affected farmers and factory workers, and because of the social and political controls that the Communist Party of China still had over the country. The protests started small, but by April 18th, 10,000 students staged a sit-in on Tian'anmen Square. From April 21st to April 23rd, students from Beijing called for a strike at universities, which included teachers and students boycotting classes. On May 13th, hundreds of students staged hunger strikes.

Generally, the demonstration at Tian'anmen Square was well-ordered, with daily marches of students from various Beijing colleges displaying their sympathy with the cause. However, the government declared martial law on May 20th, and soldiers and tanks from the 27th and 28th People's Liberation Army were sent to take control of the city. Demonstrators burnt abandoned buses and used them as barricades across the road to stop the troops. Tragically, some troops and tanks did get through to Tian'anmen Square, and famously, hundreds of Chinese students were shot dead.

While this is blatantly quite wrong (and I completely disagree with their actions), you do have to take into account the view of the government. Students across China were walking out of lessons, and 3 men were arrested for defacing government property. All of this escalated with the negative portrayal of the protests by the Chinese government, and the demonstrators' angry response continued to make the situation worse and worse; the government saw this as a downward spiral, and decided to take decisive action before China was reduced to riots, which is interesting considering the Chinese government _encouraged_ the students to behave in almost exactly the same way during the Cultural Revolution. It is also interesting to note that the Chinese Government told its citizens that the students were shot because the students had been killing people. (Something students only did during the Cultural Revolution, NOT in 1989)
