The hypothalamus is basically the mastermind of the endocrine system. It controls both anterior pituitary and posterior pituitary. Although the hypothalamus itself doesn't release any hormones, it makes the hormones oxytocin and antidiuretic hormone which are stored in the posterior pituitary until it is told by the hypothalamus to release it.

The pituitary gland is the main gland of the body that excretes hormones known as hormone regulators. This means that these proteins can control the other hormone-excreting organs of the body to excrete their own hormones. Without these hormones of the pituitary gland, your body would not be able to control hormone excretion of the other organs of your body (thyroid glands, adrenal glands etc.)
