BMI is an acronym for Body Mass Index. You find it by taking your weight and dividing it by your height (in inches) squared, then multiplied by 703. The result you get from this is your BMI. 17 and below is underweight, 18 to 24 is normal, 24 to 28 is overweight (I may be off on some of these numbers), and 32 and over is clinically obese.

BMI tells you how much FAT is on your body. The scale can be deceiving. If you just look at how much you weigh and look up your height and weight on a chart it might indicate that you are normal, overweight or underweight.

Since BMI tells you how much of your body is fat it lets you know if you should be dieting.

For example, the chart says that I should weigh 185 pounds. That same chart might say that I have 30% body fat and that I am a high risk for health problems.

But BMI tells me that my lean body mass is 212 pounds. In other words, if I had zero body fat I would weigh 212 pounds. But there might be other people my height who could have 20% body fat at 185 pounds but they wouldn't know if they didn't run the test.

BMI stands for body mass index, and that measures your weight vs. your height, and assuming your bone structure or muscle mass does not affect your weight much, it will give you the most accurate fat measurement. A normal BMI is between 18 and 24. if its over 30, you're very overweight. if you look up BMI counter I'm sure you can find your own BMI.

BMI is NOT important to overall health. This is an inaccurate indicator of health and thus should not be trusted. Some, however, might argue that BMI indicates your fat percentage, or how close you are to being in a healthy weight range. Since the BMI has been proven to not be an accurate indicator of health by recent research, some people still seek to use it as a gauge for weight range and are often times distracted by the number that they are presented with, which is not even truly beneficial.
