Long answer short, it's pressurized, so the gas that would take up thousands of cubic litres only takes up the space of a cylinder, so it cools when pressurized and forms liquid.

The transition in organic compounds is that as the number of carbon increases the molecules will change state from gas(methane) to solid(colloids)(cellulose)

But butane has only four carbon atoms in its molecule and hence a gas..in ordinary conditions.

In its natural state, at 10 degrees Celsius - it's a gas. HOWEVER - it can be compressed into liquid form if store in pressure vessels.
