What was the significance of Christopher Columbus discoveries?

On his voyage, he was tasked with discovery of India, by sailing west, which was postulated to be a shorter distance than sailing east around Africa. When arriving in the what is now that Bahamas, he called the inidigenous people Indians, and then subjugated them. Although he didn't discover the route to India, by sailing west, from Spain, he did discover new land.

His first voyage was important because he (almost) discovered a whole new continent for the Europeans to trade with and colonize on.
