As host to the North American International Auto Show, the Grand Prix, the Woodward Dream Cruise and the Michigan International Speedway, Detroit is America's largest auto producer as well as a mecca for automobile culture.

Origins

Henry Ford, a pioneer in the auto industry and the namesake and founder of Ford Motor Co., established the company's factory on Mack Avenue in Detroit in 1903.

History

With the rise of Ford's assembly line factory, which became a model for other industries, auto production flourished in Detroit, which became the home of the new auto industry. Besides Ford, General Motors and the Chrysler Group are based in Detroit.

Method

The assembly-line method first used on Ford's Model-T car created many simple, repeatable jobs for employees, who quickly became experts at their own individual tasks "on the line." This created jobs, sped up production and was cost-effective.

Chronology

With the rise of the auto industry, Detroit grew from a city of 285,000 in 1900 to its more than 1.5 million in 1930, according to tourist website
