Elvis, the king of rock and roll, was amongst the first stars of modern music in the 1950s. He was perhaps the first superstar of the new age of entertaiment. Elvis Presley had a unique singing voice, and was capable of entertaining (sublimely!) with that alone. Couple his gift of voice and style of music with his entry into entertainment at a unique time and place and possibilities abound. Perhaps with a bit of luck, but with enormous talent, character and charisma, he became the superstar and legend he is recognized as being, as cited in the first post.
Elvis is remembered or referred to so many times because of his legacy he gave to the music industry and even the world. His influence is beyond what he ever dreamed of. Elvis started a new sound wich was then called rockabilly music and contained influences of blues, hillbilly(country&western music) and gospel. Elvis was the first white artist who dared to record music from black artist like Chuck Berry,Little Richard cause till then 'black music' was not allowed to be listened to on regular radio or even recordstores. Elvis was also the first artist to dress like a negro (flashy clothes) and moved like one when he was on stage in the early 50's. In all; Elvis dared to cross over racial boundaries with "his music" in the 50's wich were unheard for in the 50's for in segregated America. He was cursed for it by right-wing America who called Elvis " the devil " with "this n... music " and a danger to society. Infact many of Elvis his performances in the 50's were filmed by the FBI to have evidence if arrested of impropper behaviour. One of the biggest artist who joined in the cursing of Elvis then, was Frank Sinatra. Years later an editor of TIME magazine was quoted: With Elvis Popmusic was created and a Popstar-Idol was born.
I think because he was the king of Rockin Roll and he made his way up to the top and made more #1 hits than any body. And if you wanna know......The only person that ever came close to having as much #1 hits was Micheal Jackson.
Because
Because as John Lennon stated "without Elvis there would be nothing." He was the breakthrough artist that almalgamated a variety of Music Genres and paved the way for all other artists to follow.
He only lived until he was 42 (died 1977) but continues to outsell most living artists. Elvis is king.
