Why is God the source of happiness?

God is the source of happiness for many Christians, Jews and Muslims because belief provides a sense of comfort and a belief that there is someone watching over them. Other gods provide a source of happiness for followers of other religions.

Biblical answer:

Jesus described the way to happiness at Matthew 5:3-12 and it was the first topic he talked about in his famous sermon on the mount. The first thing he mentioned in verse 3 was "happy are those conscious of their spiritual need" (New World Translation). Many translations use the term "happy are the poor in spirit" here.

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary had this to say about what "poor in spirit" meant: "The poor in spirit are happy. These bring their minds to their condition, when it is a low condition. They are humble and lowly in their own eyes. They see their want, bewail their guilt, and thirst after a Redeemer. The kingdom of grace is of such; the kingdom of glory is for them."

The New Living Bible uses the wording: "God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him..."

It is the Christian view, that humans have an innate desire to have a relationship with God who is the creator. It is felt that many people have a huge void in their lives because they do not have a relationship with him. Hence, the first step to happiness, is realizing that we have the need for a relationship with God, and then taking steps toward forming that relationship with him.

God himself is infinitely happy (1 Chronicles 16:27). Awareness of God, and a relationship with Him, can provide: 1) The fortitude to overcome peer pressure.

2) Self-discipline and contentment (whose lack has led our society to epidemic obesity, drunkenness, depression and ennui, divorce rates, violence etc.).

3) An additional layer of education, maturity and circumspection.

4) Emotional fortitude, helping one overcome hardships.

5) A sense of identity and a relevant community, with its ambiance and mutual help.

6) A life and a sense of purpose.
