Wanting to revenge his father, he tries to decide the best course. By making people think he is mad, he casts himself as mostly harmless. But in actuality, he still has the intellect to consider and plan.

It gives him an advantage over all those people who are trying to wangle information out of him. Take Polonius. He engages Hamlet in conversation to try to get information and Hamlet replies with insulting and almost-coherent nonsense. It gives everyone an explanation for his behaviour, so he can do whatever he wants. After the nunnery scene Ophelia says, "Oh, what a noble mind is here o'erthrown." She doesn't say, "Oh, what a jerk." The same thing happens in the closet scene when Hamlet sees the ghost--Gertrude says, "Alas, he's mad." This is very frustrating for Hamlet because he is not pretending and does not want her to think he's mad but she does. He tries very hard to persuade her that "It is not madness that I have uttered" and that the problem is her misbehaviour not his madness. It's easy to avoid telling people things when they think you're crazy but it's hard to get them to take you seriously.

Firstly, it is not certain that Hamlet did feign madness.

If he did, then it was probably for a number of reasons:

  • Revenge heroes in Elizabethan revenge tragedy often faked madness in order to get their victim (i.e. Claudius) to no longer see them as a threat
  • So that he is able to express views that he would not normally be able to
  • To excuse his behaviour

Hamlet has been forced to remain at the Danish court under the watchful eye of his uncle. He hopes that by acting insane, the king will not take him seriously as a threat. This will enable Hamlet to get close enough to him to kill him.

What is the plot of Hamlet ?

Hamlet is about a young man (Hamlet) who is told by the ghost of his father that Hamlet's uncle and stepfather murdered him. Hamlet acts crazy while waiting for the right moment to kill his uncle, but his uncle is spying on him and guesses the truth. In the end the uncle's plot to kill Hamlet almost succeeds, but before he dies, Hamlet completes his revenge.

Does Hamlet become insane by the end of the play?

At first, He merely feigns it to plot his revenge on the "smiling damned villain" Claudius. There is a "method in his madness", that is while he works out how he can wreak his vengeance. However, this question appears when he first starts hallucinating within his mother's chambers when he berates her for marrying his uncle. The exact incident is that he is in the middle of berating his mother, when he looks up and "Sees" the ghost of his father, however, his mother does not. This raises the question that is being asked. In short, nobody has proven or disproven is insanity, and it may not be possible to.
