India is an incredibly fertile land, thanks to the incredibly rich soils and sediments brought down by many rivers from the Himalayas and other mountain systems. This factor is greatly enhanced by the warm and wet climate present even as far north as North India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, which is also a result of the Himalayas. This blocks cold air from Siberia and Mongolia from reaching the subcontinent while drawing warm, moist air south from the Indian ocean over the entire region to keep it well watered. The ability of the huge landmass to grow great quantities of crops in a short space of time means more people can be fed, and so more people can be supported by a smaller space of land. The climate and rich soil make South Asia the most fertile, and therefore most populated region on Earth. More food also means two things.

Firstly, the people themselves are fertile thanks to a rich diet, and so can (and will) produce many children (completely natural as humans, its amazing how many people associate this with hardship), hence a larger population.

Secondly, in ancient times this plentiful food supply attracted and brought many people together (as well as producing more offspring), thus creating the first early civilisations around the fertile Indus and Ganges rivers. The same occurred along the fertile banks of the Nile (Egyptians), Yellow (Chinese) and Tiber (Romans) rivers. Large early populations are a good headstart, ensuring large future populations (as today in China, Egypt and of course India). These ancient civilisations also simultaneously invented and perfected their own forms of irrigations, which were very effective.

The assumption that poverty is the reason for the large population density is completely incorrect. India has always been more densely populated than other large regions like Europe and the Americas, even before the advent of modern medicine, industrialization and family planning, and long before people were talking about poverty in society i.e. when India was no worse than Europe or America. India is still largely agricultural cos it would be completely stupid if it wasn't! I mean, all that fertile expanse of land would just go to waste, it's a massive asset.

There are reasons like illiteracy, poverty, no strict rules or laws and lack of proper guidance due to which our population is increasing.

That's because the leaders of the state aka nehru with his austere plans and fabian socialist visions made Indians so poor and insecure that people wanted more helping hands to earn livelihood. unfortunately these poor people eventually become poorer and continue to breed like pigs. They have no other form of entertainment, pre-occupation, pursuit or ambition. Sex for most Indians is the cheapest form of entertainment.

Lack of education and the believe that more childeren will increase family income.

Consideration of the fact that it will end up keeping the family in poverty does not come into the mind of the average Indian. Compound that with the situation if the family has a daughter first (they are considered burdens not money makers or an asset) then they will keep trying to produce a son.

Therefore..perpetual increase of population. Education is the key. Sadly it wont change anytime soon. Oh yes, and lastly, because the majorioty of inidans are poor with little excess money bordom and time pass will come inot play so; what better than a bit of love making?

Thats all.

Most regions of the Old World along river valleys and in coastal areas have generated, over the centuries, extremely large populations because of their consistent access to staple grains. (Note that Africa and Australia did not have the same access and, therefore, had a slower population growth.) The only reasons why Europe is not as densely populated as India is because of the massive percentage of the continent killed by the Black Death and the massive exodus of European population to the Americas. China and India did not suffer as badly (in a proportional sense) to disease and never had a mass emigration, resulting in huge populations upon entering the 20th century.

Additionally, the rise in medical care in India, coupled with traditionally large families, has spurred India's continued population growth to the present. This contrasts with China, whose population growth is slowing because of the controversial One-Child Policy.

If we look at world history, we have three categories of regions in terms of populations: (1) Depopulated and Colonized, (2) Depopulated to Colonize, and (3) Unmoved. Category 1 applies to the Americas and Australia. These were areas where the indigenous population died off and people from foreign lands provided most of the population. Since the population here is a recent import, it has not had the time to experience massive population booms. Category 2 applies to Europe and Africa. These were areas where the indigenous population survived and experienced a large population boom, but this boom was drained off in order to populate the Category 1 regions. (In the case of Europe, it was by choice, but in the case of Africa, it was enslavement.) Category 3 applies to Asia, which retained its indigenous population, went through a population boom, and never had its population transferred elsewhere.

Since Asia is in Category 3, India, China, Indonesia, and most other Asian countries have large populations relative to countries of similar size on other continents. However, India has had wild population growth recently because of high birth rates and increasing life expectancy from medicine.
