The gods of modern Hinduism include the chief gods Shiva, Vishnu and the Mother Goddess Shakti as well as a myriad of local community gods. Devotion to these various deities is based primarily on one's region and needs, and even when devotion is given to only one, the existence of others is acknowledged. Despite these polytheistic elements, however, many Hindus explain that the gods are various forms of a single Supreme Being. Similarly, the philosophical Hindu texts advocate a pantheistic view of ultimate reality. These texts, most notably the Upanishads, explain that there exists a single Supreme Reality, called Brahman. Brahman is often personified and presented as the One that must be sought, and can begin to sound like monotheism.

"Hindus believe in monotheistic polytheism, rather than polytheism." (The Hindu Universe)

"Hinduism worships multiple forms of the one God." (OM, an American Hindu organization)

"According to the tenets of Hinduism, God is one as well as many." (HinduWebsite.com)

The Hindu religion is not monotheistic, it is polytheistic. And to answer the question of why Hinduism is polytheistic, I would imagine that it would have something to do with the fact that most religions before Jeudism where polytheistic and it just continued to be so.

ANSWER 2:

Hinduism is monotheistic because its holy writings speak of the one Creator God. One example from the Hindu Bhagavad Gita:

"Thou art Parabrahm! The High Abode! The Great Purification! Thou art God Eternal, All-creating, Holy, First, Without beginning! Lord of Lords!"

The many statues seen in Hinduism each represent one of God's attributes.

ANSWER 2.5:

Despite contrary beliefs, Hinduism is monotheistic. The many "Gods" and statues that are known in Hinduism are all different because in Hinduism, we believe not religious tolerance, but acceptance. We give every Hindu the freedom to worship God in whatever shape/form they want to. No "God" is the "right" God. Whatever you believe, whomever you believe in, it is your choice.
