Christians understand that Jesus died on the cross so he could save us from sin and evil.

It also says in the Scriptures, (The Bible)

"For God loved the world so much that he gave his only son so whoever believes in him will not perish but will have eternal life."

John 3:16

Christians also understand that Jesus went through pain, suffering and persecution. He got spat on, disowned by his own disciples, beaten and ridiculed by the public who weren't Christians.

In the event called "The Last Supper" he foretold that he would be betrayed by one of his own disciples and he would die on the crucifix and arise from the dead 3 days later.

When Pilate sentenced Jesus to Death on the cross. They then made him carry the large crucifix to to Calvary. Then he was nailed to the cross and spat on. The Roman soldiers then took off Jesus' clothes and drew lots between the soldiers.

After he died up the soldiers took him down and pierced him from the side with their spears. They then put him in a tomb and put a large boulder to prevent anyone from stealing the body.

When Mary Magdalene came to prepare Jesus' body for burial she found that the stone had been rolled away and the Roman soldiers were gone. She then ran to call the other disciples.

They all came inside the tomb, there was a angel sitting down holding what looked like Jesus' robe. He asked them, "Who are you looking for?" They replied, "Jesus the Nazarene" The angel then told them that he has arisen to heaven.

The Christians see this as a miracle and a sign of forgiveness by God.

Till this day Christians wear crucifixes on their neck to show that they are a Christian.

That is why Jesus' crucifixion is significant to Christianity

Its significant because Its God coming to earth in the form of a man and dieing for our sins so we don't have sacrifice for them anymore and he also split the rift between us and God so we can talk directly to him not through anyone else like a priest. It also shows Gods divine love for us because he sent his one and only son to die for our sins on the cross so we could be with him in heaven.

also

Throughout Biblical history the way for man to restored his broken relationship with God is through a blood sacrifice. People sacrificed an animal to show they were sorry for breaking their relationship with God.

But when the time was right God sent His son to be the saviour of mankind.

Gal 4:4 But when the right time finally came, God sent his own Son. He came as the son of a human mother and lived under the Jewish Law,

God sent his son to die as a sacrifice to restore people into a right relationship with Him

Rom 3:25 God offered him, so that by his blood he should become the means by which people's sins are forgiven through their faith in him.......

Jesus died on a cross, so the symbol of a cross has importance to a christian in that it reminds us that ......God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life. .John 3:16
