Why is North Dakota called the Rough Rider State?

Theodore Roosevelt was an officer of the First US Volunteer Cavalry to fight in the Spanish American War. The "rough and tumble" appearance of the men in the regiment earned them the name "Roughriders". Due to the fact that several North Dakota cowboys were members of the regiment and due to Theodore Roosevelt's ties to North Dakota, North Dakota tourism used the name 'Roughrider State' and 'Roughrider Country' in tourism promotions in the 1960's and 1970's. Because of the tourism promotion, North Dakota became known as the Roughrider State.
