Plywood is good for basic domestic construction projects -- shelves, tables, games, etc.... it is basically "slices" of wood glued together in a sandwich, usually with each layer going against the grain of the one beneath it. The combination creates a very strong piece of wood, better than particle board, which is essentially pressed and glued together wood chips.

Plywood is an engineered composite material; it is made by gluing thin sheets of wood , called plies or wood veneers together. The grain of each layer of the wood sandwich is set at right angels to each other and it comes in various thicknesses and surface finishes.

The interior layers are made from cheep wood such as pine and the surface can be a veneer of expensive wood such as mahogany. The cross layering of the grains and the glued structure give the plywood a high uniform strength in all directions and it is less expensive than solid wood.

When properly incorporated with household items (shelves, tables, racks) plywood will add strength without taking from the appearance. Plywood is strong, easy to cut or drill, and is less expensive than hardwood. Plywood is used in building cabinets and shelves, furniture, and as floor or roof decking. Plywood is a versatile building material used for anything from hobby craft to commercial construction.
