Unlike Scotland and England, which are Kingdoms, Wales is a 'non-sovereign principality'. Traditionally, (since the 13th Century) the heir to the UK throne has been invested as 'Prince of Wales'.

Prior to the English conquest of Wales the Welsh had their own princes. Llywelyn the Great (1195-1240) proclaimed himself to be "Prince of Wales" in 1216. His son and grandson were recognised by the English kings as "Prince of Wales" until they got tired of them and decided to have them killed instead. The last Welsh "Prince of Wales" was brutally executed in 1283. Owain Glyndwr was also proclaimed "Prince of Wales" in 1400 during a brief rebellion against England... however Owain got away and may yet return to liberate his country!

He is called William Wales because his father is the Prince of Wales, and Prince Harry is called Henry/Harry Wales.

Their cousins Beatrice and Eugenie, who are the daughters of the queen's second son Prince Andrew are called Beatrice York and Eugenie York in school.

It is custom for royals to use the last name of a place rather than their real last name (Mountbatten-Windsor) when they work, go to school, etc.

Note that Prince William is now "Prince William, Duke of Cambridge" , as of his wedding day, and thus no longer "Prince William of Wales". He is also "Baron Carrickfergus".

One suspects William would continue with the name he has got used to, and will not change to use "William Cambridge", nor "Baron Carrickfergus".

Since the middle ages every heir to the British throne has had the title "Prince of Wales" so when Prince Charles' mother became Queen in 1952 he had this title because he became the heir.

What's Prince William's last name?

Royalty do not use last names in the traditional sense. When last names are necessary, such as in marriage, Prince William, Prince Harry, and the other descendants of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip are to use the name Mountbatten-Windsor. In some circumstances the princes are known as William Wales and Harry Wales or William of Wales and Harry of Wales. This is how they were known at University and in the Army.

Why is wiiliam Wales and not windsor?

He IS William Windsor- 'William Wales' is only a title given to him by the English media designed deliberately to provoke the Welsh by reducing the name of their nation to an English Royal surname, and the Welsh hate it. You should always know that the real surname of Princes William and Harry is Windsor- if you hear them being referred to as 'Wales' this is a jibe by the BBC in an attempt to bait the Welsh.
