Catholic AnswerThe definition of a sacrament is "a sensible sign, instituted by Jesus Christ, by which invisible grace and inward sanctification are communicated to the soul. The essential elements of a sacrament are (1) institution by Christ while on earth, (2) a sensible sign that actually (3) confers the supernatural grace it symbolizes. Confession (also known as Penance or Reconciliation) is one of the seven sacraments that Our Blessed Lord instituted while He was on earth and the Church has faithfully practices ever since. (extracted from Modern Catholic Dictionary byJohn A. Hardon, S.J. Doubleday & Co., Inc. Garden City, NY 1980)

from

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition, English translation 1994

1210 Christ instituted the sacraments of the new law. There are seven: Baptism, Confirmation (or Chrismation), the Eucharist, Penance, the Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders and Matrimony, The seven sacraments touch all the stages and all the important moments of Christian life; (cf. St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologiae III, 65, 1) they give birth and increase, healing and mission to the Christian's life of faith. There is thus a certain resemblance between the stages of natural life and the stages of the spiritual life.
