Simon was one of Jesus' apostles, one whom he put a lot of trust. Simon was, however, weak when Jesus was incarcerated and tortured. Jesus had told him that he would deny him three times before the cock crowed (morning). He did deny Him three times, after which he realized what he had done.

When Peter was set for Crucifixion, he requested to be hanged upside down because he felt unworthy to die as Jesus died.

In Matthew 16:18 it says that; Jesus spoke "And I also say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it." As the foundation (rock) of the church it was Simon Peter who lead the church in the earliest years after Jesus' death. Peter is considered the first Pope (Father of the Christian Church).
