There are two people named Saint James both of whom were apostles. The titles James the Greater and James the Less were used to distinguish one from the other.

One thought is that the "Greater" and "Less" titles applied because James the Greater appears in The Bible more (aka more was written about him) than James the Less -- which is the same distinction between a major prophet and minor prophet in the Old Testament.

Another theory was that James the Less was shorter of stature and James the Greater was taller.

James the Greater was the son of Zebedee and brother of John (Matt. 4:21), James the Less (also called James the Younger) was the son of a man named Alphaeus (Matt. 10:3).
