Why is US called the free country if it has many laws?

These laws are passed by a government elected by the population at large, and at least in theory they're not imposed from without by some privileged class upon the rest of society.

The question sounds like the start of a strawman argument by an anarchist, which can possibly best be countered by the realization that a great many laws are designed specifically for the purposes of establishing things along the lines of "one man's freedom to swing his fist ends where another man's chin starts."
