he stole the mona lisa
Vincenzo Peruggia died on 1925-10-08.
Vencenzo Peruggia, a Louvre employee, stole the famous painting in 1911.
Which Ciappa; Carlo, Victor, or Vincenzo?
Vincenzo Peruggia's motive for stealing the Mona Lisa from the Louvre was to return the painting to Italy because he hoped the Italian government would give him a reward. Peruggia wanted to return the painting to its native land because he believed that all the Italian art in the Louvre had been stolen by Napoleon -- including the Mona Lisa. Peruggia selected the Mona Lisa because she was small and easy to carry. Unfortunately for Peruggia, the Mona Lisa had not been stolen by Napoleon at all. It came to France with Leonardo da Vinci when he went there to work at the court of King Francis I. King Francis either purchased the Mona Lisa from da Vinci or from one of his heirs.
Yes. See the related link below for the story.
In 1911 Vincenzo Peruggia wrapped his painter's smock around the Mona Lisa and carried it out of the Louvre under his arm. He kept the painting in his apartment in Paris, hidden in a box. In December 1913, after contacting an Italian art dealer, he brought the painting by train to Milan, then to Florence, where he attempted to sell it to the art dealer and the Uffizi Gallery. Instead he was arrested.
