Well here are some facts about the coral reef:

  • coral reefs are like many rainforests, only under water
  • when the reef drops about 50 ft.and for many reef fish who find shelters on the cliff the reef face is the zone above the reef floor or reef drop
  • the reef flat-sandy bottomed flat can be behind the main reef, containing chunks of coral
  • the reef lagoon "many coral reefs completely enclose an area",there by creating a quite water lagoon
Thanks for coming!

There are both hard corals and soft corals, which fall into three types of coral reefs. Fringing reefs form along Coastlines, growing in shallow water along a continental shelf. Barrier reefs grow further out in the ocean, but are still parallel along the shoreline. Coral atolls grow in rings atop long forgotten volcanoes deep in the ocean. They begin their life as fringe reefs, and then continue to grow as the volcano begins to sink until all that remains is the reef itself

Coral reefs are primarily made from the limestone structures made by coral polyps. Coral polyps are colonial animals that secrete calcite exoskeletons (called corals) to protect themselves. Over time these corals accumulate one on top of another to form a reef that reaches from depth to the surface. The reef is a habitat for great varieties of other marine life much of which feeds on the corals, excreting their hard parts as sand (coral sand) and it is this sand which fills in the gaps between the corals as the reef builds up.

Why coral reefs are important to fishing and tourism?

Coral reefs should be conserved for several reason. One is to prevent some marine species from extinction.Furthermore, coral reefs are an important source of nutrition and livelihood for many.Conserving reefs also contributes to the economy of fishermen as the yield for marine reserves are encouraging.Besides that, coral reefs help to maintain the habitats of many marine species by facilitating the growth of mangrove swamps and seagrasses.Reefs also helps to prevent shoreline erosion.Corals are also valuable as potentiol sources for medicines. Finally, coral reefs have the potential to increase the income generated from eco-tourism. Coral reefs are some of the oldest and most diverse ecosystems on our planet. They are one of the ocean's main nurseries and feeding grounds for fish and invertebrates, provide natural storm barriers for coastlines, and are a potential source for novel pharmaceuticals. Throughout their range, coral reefs are dying due to human influences. These negative influences induce stress and increase diseases in these populations. This lecture will cover the threats to coral reefs globally and why local coral reef loss is important to Puerto Rico.
