he discovered the sea route around Africa

The discovery of the passage around Africa was significant because, for the first time, Europeans could trade directly with India and the other parts of Asia, bypassing the overland route through the Middle East, with its expensive middlemen.

What achievement is Bartholomew Dias best remembered for in history?

Born: ca. 1450 Birthplace: Died: May 1500 Best Known As: Portuguese discoverer of the Cape of Good Hope Bartolomeu Dias was a Portugese navigator whose 1487-88 Atlantic voyage around the southern tip of Africa opened sea routes between Europe and Asia. In 1486 King João II (King John II) assigned Dias, a member of the royal court, to command a voyage with both spiritual and material aspirations: Dias was to search for the lands of Prester John -- a legendary Christian priest and African king -- and challenge the Muslim dominance of trade with Asia. By 1488 Dias had unknowingly rounded the African continent in a storm and made landfall at what is now Mossel Bay. On his return voyage he discovered what he called the Cape of Storms (Cabo Tormentoso), later re-named the Cape of Good Hope (Caboda Bõa Esperança) by João. Although Dias did not find any sign of an African Christian, his voyage established a sea route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean and Asia. In 1497 Dias accompanied Vasco da Gama on a voyage as far as the Cape Verde Islands, and in 1500 he joined Pedro Alvares Cabral's westward expedition. Dias's ship went down in a storm and he perished at sea sometime in late May (Cabral went on to make landfall in Brazil). Dias's brother, Pero Dias, was also part of the 1487-88 voyage, commanding the supply ship... The Cape of Good Hope is sometimes thought to be the southernmost tip of the African continent, but that title belongs to Cape Agulhas... His name is sometimes spelled Bartholomew Diaz.

When did bartolo dias explore?

AnswerBartolomeu Dias looked for treasure with others. King John the second had dammanded Dias explorered for him and unexpectedly he found the Cape of Good Hope.In 1487, King John II of Portugal ordered Dias to try to sail to the southern end of Africa. The king wanted to know if ships could reach Asia by sailing around Africa. He had earlier ordered land and sea expeditions to travel to Asia, but those attempts at the journey failed.Dias commanded a fleet of 3 ships that left Portugal in the summer of 1487. After reaching the mouth of the Orange River in southern Africa, a storm blew the ships out to sea. Dias and his crews did not see land for 13 days. When the storm ended, he realized that the ships had been blown around the southern tip of Africa. He sailed the southeast shore of the continent, hoping to continue on to India. But, Dias decided to return to Portugal, for the reasons of food supply was low and everyone was exhausted. As the expedition sailed around the tip of Africa toward Portugal, Dias sighted what is now known as Cape of Good Hope. According to earlier writings, Dias called it the Cape of Storms. However, King John later renamed it the Cape of Good Hope because its discovery indicated a sea route to India would soon be found. In 1494, Dias directed two ships that would be known as the first successful expedition around Africa to India. In another voyage, Dias tried to follow explorer, Da Gama's expedition to India, but the fleet drifted off course and reached what is now known as Brazil. Dias died during the voyage from Brazil when a storm sank his ship.
