Carbon-14 dating is a way of determining the age of certain archaeological artifacts of a biological origin up to about 50,000 years old. It is used in dating things such as bone, cloth, wood and plant fibers that were created in the relatively recent past by human activities.

Carbon-14 is the parent isotope, its constant decay rate is about 5730 years. Which means it takes that many years for it to decay to a stable daughter Nitrogen-14. To determine how old something is you see how much Carbon-14 there is in relation to Nitrogen-14. Carbon-14 can only be used to date something that was once living and under 50,000 years.

Because all living things contain Carbon and a small portion of that Carbon is the radioactive isotope Carbon14. There would be little point in using other radio active isotopes which aren't naturally present in things which need to be dated.

All living things have carbon in them; but a small amount of that carbon is radioactive. That radioactive carbon is carbon-14. The law of conservation and mass states that matter can not be destroyed nor created. So that is why carbon-14 is used for radioactive dating.

What are some benefits of carbon dating to humans?

Carbon dating is very important. Carbon dating is the radio-activity of Carbon 14 which is unstable so it emits protons once in a while in order to become a more stable isotope. Using Carbon dating, we can determine with accuracy how old something is.

How do you calculate age using carbon dating?

When a living thing dies, it stops taking in carbon-14, and the carbon-14 decays into nitrogen-14 at a steady rate. By measuring how much carbon-14 remains, scientists can estimate how old a specimen is.

How is the amount of carbon-14 in an artifact related to its age?

The level of carbon 14 in an artefact reduces by 50% every 5730 years from the moment that the raw material from which the artefact is made no longer is exchanging carbon with he atmosphere, in most cases this is the point of death of the animal or plant.
