South Africa uses coal for power because it has no significant oil reserves, very little natural gas and a whole lot of coal, far more than its domestic consumption requires.

Alternative clean power generation is at an experimental stage but there is a lot of potential for wind and solar power in the country. Hydro power is unlikely to develop, as South Africa is a dry country, but it has been involved in Hydro power projects in Mozambique, Angola and Congo (DRC)

High grade coal is mainly exported, typically to iron and steel manufacturers.

Low grade coal is used to fire power stations that generate most of the electricity used in South Africa.

A small portion of coal production is converted to liquid fuels.

They are two different states of matter. Oil is liquid Coal is solid. NB As an aside during the trade embargo on South Africa (during Apartheid era), no oil was allowed to be imported into South Africa. However, South Africa had large reserves of coal. So South Africa developed SASOL. SASOL is the industrial conversion of coal to oil, so that oil burning furnaces could function. NNB Both oil and coal are hydro-carbons.
