Ozone protects life on Earth from the harshest of ultraviolet light. Without it, there is a increased chance of people getting skin cancers and related problems from overexposure to the UV rays. The ozone hole occurs where there is no UV-B to be protected from, but it is an indicator of the overall "state of health" of the ozone layer. More contaminants = thinner ozone layer overall = larger ozone hole = ozone hole forms sooner = ozone hole heals later.

∙ 12y agoThe ozone layer protects us from ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, which is deadly. Without the ozone layer there would probably be no life on the surface of the earth.
Ozone is destroyed by certain gasses, particularly CFCs, which until relatively recently were used in a variety of products including refrigerators, aerosols and some packing foams. However the Montreal protocol, which came into force in 1989, phased out the use of CFCs and in 2010 scientists confirmed that depletion of the ozone layer had halted. The ozone layer is predicted to be fully restored by 2060.
