Iron is very important and can be found in liver, kidneys, dried fruit, beef and cocoa. It is required for the formation of haemoglobin as well as the formation of important muscles. Iron is stored in the liver. If iron is not eaten in a diet, anaemia, shortness of breath and tiredness are the deficiency symptoms.

Your body needs iron for several reasons. Iron deficiency is the most common nutrient deficiency in the US and around the world. Average male needs 8-11 mg daily. Average non pregnant female needs around 11-18mg daily. Iron deficiency causes anemia which reduces the oxygen carried to tissue. The elderly, vegetarians and children are often iron deficient. People who are low in iron may experience weakness, fatigue, an inability to focus, increased susceptibility to illness, hair loss, lack of balance, headaches, brittle nails, apathy and depression. They may also crave or eat inedible materials such as dirt, clay, laundry starch, charcoal, and lead paint chips, a behavior called pica. Iron deficiency is associated with learning disabilities and a lower IQ in children and Harvard researchers recently determined that that iron deficiency may play a key role in female infertility.

Main reasons Iron is important in your diet.

  • It's essential for making hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to other cells.
  • It's an important component of myoglobin (a protein that helps supply oxygen to your muscles), collagen (a protein in bone, cartilage, and other connective tissue), and many enzymes.
  • It helps you maintain a healthy immune system.

If you are pregnant it is very important and a lot of pregnant women end up having to take iron pills. Pregnant women need around 20-40 mg a day.

  • The amount of blood in your body increases during pregnancy until you have almost 50 percent more blood than usual, so you need more iron to make more hemoglobin.
  • You need extra iron for your growing baby and placenta, especially in the second and third trimesters.
  • Many women need more because they start their pregnancy with insufficient stores of iron.
  • Iron-deficiency anemia during pregnancy is associated with preterm delivery, low birth weight, and infant mortality.

Good sources of iron:

  • Meat and poultry
  • Fruits: Orange, Orange Juice, cantaloupe, strawberries, grapefruit
  • Vegetables: Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, tomato, Tomato Juice, potato, green & red peppers

If you are unable to consume your daily need of iron daily through diet you can buy iron supplements at you local Walgreens, CVS or other drug stores. They are not costly.

The human body?s need for iron is crucial. Without it, we would not survive. Over 65% of the body?s iron is found in hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells. Iron is the center atom of this heme molecule and works to bind, and thus transport, oxygen molecules to all of the cells in our body. Iron also helps to store oxygen in the tissues and aids in energy production by taking part in the electron transport chain. Another function of iron is to be a part of many enzymatic reactions required by the body on a daily basis.
Why is iron important?

Iron is very important because it helps your body to make haemoglobin. Haemoglobin, or 'Hb', is the protein found in red blood cells that carries oxygen around your body and gives blood its red colour.
