Bachelor in Bachelor's Degree means a person having a baccalaureate (originally, a laurel berry). In feudal times it was was used for a young male servant, which led to its present sense of an unmarried man. When women were admitted to higher learning, they became holders of baccalaureates, hence "bachelors." Spinster has no bearing or relation to any of this, being an imprecise term for an unwed female of a certain age.
