It is called the 'Great Pyramid' because it is the largest one among the ancient Egyptian pyramids.

It was built c.2550BC for the Pharaoh Khufu. It is 137 metres high and contains 2.3 million limestone and granite blocks.
It may just be because it is the largest of all the pyramids ever built, or maybe it's because the building plan is different.

As it is the largest ever built and one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World it acquired the name 'The Great Pyramid of Giza' and one could easily say that is a nickname. The proper name is the Pyramid of Khufu, who built it as his tomb, or also the Pyramid of Cheops, that being his Greek name.
The term 'Great Pyramid' was coined when it was added to the list of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Because it was built in honor of a pharaoh and he wanted it to be big so he would be remembered. It was also tall so that the deceased pharaoh could reach Ra, the god of the sun in the sky.
