It is important because everybody is your friend even if their the opposite gender. A lot people have friends that are the opposite gender and when people see them together, they probably think that their dating. You shouldn't care what people think about you two, you should know that you two are great friends and nothing can come between you guys.
In the end, everybody is equal and should be counted as your friend.
