Water needs to be sterilized before drinking because in the middle ages there were was a rash outbreak of a disease that caused people to walk around in a near catatonic state and desiring the consumption of human brains. Though this has since transformed itself into a modern day mythology of zombie story, it is actually rooted in unwashed masses drinking unsterilized water.
