Some vitamins can be dangerous if you take a little too much of them, and all vitamins can be dangerous if you take way too much of them.

The common vitamins that can cause problems if you only take a little bit too much of them are vitamins A, D, E and K because they are fat soluble and not cleared by the body. They just get stored in your body and can become toxic.

Excess iron can also not be cleared by the body, but gets stored in your liver and can make you sick.

In general, water soluble vitamins aren't as dangerous. If you take too much of them it just comes out in your urine (that's why your urine is bright yellow when you take B vitamins). But if you take high levels of any vitamin it could cause problems.

The best idea with vitamins is to look at the RDI - recommended daily intake levels for you. This can change according to your age and gender and medical conditions. If you're just after a boost of everything a multivitamin is OK. If you want to take high levels of a specific vitamin it's best to talk to a nutritionist (check they have a Uni degree and aren't just a quack) or your doctor.
