∙ 14y agoThe biggest reason is that if the computer is in the process of writing data to a file when you turn it off, that file could become corrupted and unreadable. Modern operating systems and file systems have safeguards against this, but it's still better to shut the computer down cleanly rather than simply yanking out the power cord.

∙ 15y agoOn Windows you should close and save all programs, then press start then go to shut down. That closes the programs the PC is runing properly and is unlikely to corrupt any data. (you should always make sure it is shut down before you put the lid down or it can stay on)
