When Muslims wear Ihram, they all look equal. They are all wearing to pieces of unstitched white cloth. This symbolizes that all people are equal. You cannot distinguish between the rich and the poor. It also represents simplicity. There is no pattern, no color, no design on these cloth - they are all plain white. there is no extravagance in their clothing.

Haj can be translated as pilgrimage. It is one of the 5 pillars of Islaam to make Haj to the Ka'bah in Makka at least once in one's lifetime for those who have the ability to do so. This is an act of worship, a fulfilment of one's duties a means of reward from Allah and a means of forgiveness.

Ihram refers to the state one is in when they the begin their Haj or Umrah (lesser haj) and is related to the clothing that is worn (two pieces of white cloth for men), not cutting the hair or fingernails, not applying perfume/scented oils, not hunting and not having sexual relations with one's spouse.

What type of clothing did Muslims on pilgrimage wear?

When undertaking the pilgrimage, Muslims shed all signs of their wealth and societal distinctions by donning simple white garments, commonly called ihram. The required pilgrimage dress for men is two white cloths, one of which covers the body from the waist down, and one that is gathered around the shoulder. Women usually wear a simple white dress and headscarf, or their own native dress. The ihram is a symbol of purity and equality, and signifies that the pilgrim is in a state of devotion. While wearing ihram, there are other requirements that Muslims follow in order to focus their energy on spiritual devotion. Harming any living thing is forbidden -- no hunting, fighting, or vulgar language is permitted. Vanity is discouraged, and Muslims approach pilgrimage in as natural a state as possible: excessive perfumes and colognes are not used; hair and fingernails are left in their natural state without trimming or cutting. Marital relations are also suspended during this time, and marriage proposals or weddings are delayed until after the pilgrimage experience is completed.Source: About.com

What do you wear in umrah?

Asking Question is very simple in seeing but it covers many issues and aspect which is hidden from our eyes. The simple answer in one word, you should wear "Ihram" in Umrah. What is Ihram? Ihram is not a simple dress that can be worn with taking a normal bath in a bathing tub like you wear a dress before going to any party. It is a spiritual dress that covers your body and soul. It is also called a uniform to perform Umrah. Every field has a unique uniform in our world like a judge's uniform represent a "Justice" and a white overcoat is an identity of a "Doctor". Samely two unstitched sheets of fabric is an Ihram. How is beautiful our religion than the others? Our religion never gives us permission to cross the boundaries even we are in the House of Creator. But the teaching of other religions do not secure women during religious activities like Islam. Islam gives a different law for men and women in the shape of Ihram. Women are not required to wear two unsewn sheets rather they can wear normal dress such as they wear in homes.
