because an alkali can be found in everyday household use like milk or toothpastes would know if it was an acid because it would be harmful and dangerous (well some )

alkali can be dangerous but not all of them are otherwise we would all be sick by now from using toothpaste,washing up liquid and so on .

Names of the acids often have the word "acid" as part of the name.

Sulfuric Acid

Hydrochloric Acid

Muratic Acid

Acetic Acid

Carbonic Acid

Alkalis (Bases) don't.

Lye - Sodium Hydroxide

Potash - Potassium Hydroxide

Baking Soda - Sodium Bicarbonate

Calcium Carbonate

(note, many bases are either hydroxides or carbonates)
