An expert would have to hear the sound for a diagnosis. It may be your main bearings are knocking. If it also happens if you lift your foot sharply OFF the accelarator, then that's a sure thing. - Only way to check for sure is to fit an oil pressure gauge.
Low coolant and air in the heater core.
It is quiet obvious when you have a turbo because when you accelerate you hear a whistling sound. The turbo noise is unmistakable.

Could be a bad strut or shock No I have disconnected both rear shocks and knocking noise is still there whilst driving. Seems to be coming from rear. When stationary I can bounce rear of car up and down and hear noise with handbrake on but not with handbrake off. Any ideas?
if its a low knocking noise it is normal on the 3.1 engine!! if it is loud check to make sure the valves are getting oil!! I have a 2000 Malibu v6 and it is the same way.
When you accelerate. you are putting presure on the main engine barrens. if they are going bad. You will hear this knocking sound. I don't know how many miles you have on this engine. But that's what it sounds like. But that's not all that can make this sound. You will have to tell more about it and when it started. Did it just start all at once? or did it start and then get louder?
