Asked in Philosophy and Philosophers
Why is it difficult to define philosophy?
The question assumes that it is difficult to define philosophy. That's not necessarily true. Etymologically, a "philosopher" is a "lover of wisdom." In other words, a philosopher is someone seriously trying to become wise. That's not difficult to understand. If the concept of wisdom were difficult to define, then it would be difficult to define the goal of philosophy. If the concept of wisdom were not difficult to define, then it would not be difficult to define the goal of philosophy. Whether or not wisdom is difficult to define depends upon the nature of wisdom, which is controversial. Anyone who is serious about the nature of wisdom needs to articulate what he or she thinks is a sound argument concerning its nature. Whatever argument is advanced, it will be attacked to see if it stands up to examination. Therefore, it may or may not be difficult to define the nature of philosophy, because doing so depends upon understanding the nature of wisdom. If wisdom is simple, as it may be, then so will be the definition of philosophy. If it is not the case that wisdom is simple, then neither will be the definition of philosophy. In short, the nature of philosophy is itself controversial. That itself may be sufficient for it to be classified as difficult to define. ----

What is jazz music?
Jazz is a music genre that originated at the beginning of the 20th century, possibly earlier, within the African-American communities of the Southern United States. Its roots lie in the combining by African-Americans of certain European harmony and form elements, with their existing African-based music. Jazz spans a range of music from ragtime to the present day and has proved to be very difficult to define. "If you have to ask what jazz is, you'll never know." -Louis Armstrong

For what type of organism is species a difficult term to define?
It's not so much the organism or a type of organism that is difficult to define as a species but rather the differences in the theories regarding the definition of the word 'species'. For example the Biological species concept and phylogenetic species concept can be at odds when looking at convergent/parallel evolution.

What is the difference between Modern Jazz and Jazz?
the words modern jazz are a misnoma, there is no such thing as modern jazz, jazz is an ancient art and the sounds of so called modern jazz have nothing to do with New Orleans which is the cradle of jazz. The great jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong would have nothing to do with so called modern jazz The idiom called modern jazz is no nearer to real New Orleans jazz than modern classical music such as Berlioz so why use the word jazz to describe it. although I don't decry the musical ability of people who call themselves modern jazz musicians, but it ain't jazz, so give it a break fella's and lasses find your own name, I suggest bebop, rebop or crapop.
