The element Mercury is important because it has a color of silver, it has the properties of a solid and a liquid, it is a naturally found element, and it doesn't break down. We use this element for many things like preparing felt for hats (this is why people would call hatters "mad hatters", they used mercury, which caused them to become a little crazy from breathing in the fumes), making thermometers, electrical apparatus, diffusion pumps, black lights, dental preparations, ...ect...
