Lead and zinc are found at Buchans as well as some gold and copper. A major nickel deposit was discovered at Voisey's Bay and was exploited in 1994. Newfoundland also has limestone, shale, clay, sand, gravel and stone. Other minerals include uranium in Labrador and petroleum and natural gas. Construction at Hibernia Oil Field will be completed in 1998 and will be the first effort to drill commercially for oil.
