For practical reasons it is advantageous to have neutral near first gear since you typically use first gear at the lowest speeds and neutral only when the bike is stopped. They put it above first gear instead of below it so that some one can always find first if they keep hitting the shift lever down. That way if you ever need to move the bike quickly you don't have to be shifting up and down looking for first the way it is sometimes necesary to do for neutral. If a truck is about to run into the back of your bike it is very important to be able to be in first gear and accelerating right now, whereas it is almost never important to find neutral so quickly.

Where is neutral on a 1984 Yamaha Virago xv 700?

If first is down and 2 through 6 are up Why does a motorcycle go into second instead of neutral?

Neutral is between 1st and 2nd so if you didn't shift all the way into 2nd then it would go into neutral. To get into neutral on most one down 4,5,6 up bikes you have to barely raise on the shifter until you feel it pop into neutral anything more then that barely lifting will cause it to go into second gear.

What is the Shift pattern for kawasaki ninja?

Motorcycles have a ratchet shifter. When you push the shifter down or up, the shifter returns to the middle position. First gear is selected by pushing the shifter down once from neutral. All other gear selections are by pulling the shifter up. If I remember correctly the Ninja has five gears. That would mean once down for first, once up for second, up again for third and so on. To come down through the gears is the reverse, push down on the shifter to go from fifth to fourth, once more down for third, an so on. Neutral is in between first and second. With the bike in first gear, lift the shifter gently, watching the green neutral light. When the light comes on, stop lifting the shifter. Hope this helps. Don
