A possible cause of swelling on either side of the vagina is an infected Bartholin's Gland. There is one located slightly below and on either side of the vaginal opening, and they are responsible for some of the mucus that lubricates the vagina during intercourse. If the gland's duct becomes obstructed or the gland itself becomes infected with bacteria, a cyst, and often, after that, an abscess can develop. The cyst and often subsequent abscess can become quite large (the size of a Golf-ball or bigger) and is often very painful and sensitive to the touch.
The treatments for an infected Bartholin's Gland include antibiotics and the use of hot compresses to encourage draining of the swollen gland. A gynecologist can also make an incision and insert a plastic tube to expedite draining.

∙ 18y agoIt got irritated somehow. Keep it clean and avoid intercourse for a week. If it doesn't get any better by then, or gets worse, go see your OB/GYN immediately.

The swelling should go down after 2 or so days, an anti-inflammatory might help as well but be careful which one you use as your vagina could be sensitive to a stronger anti-inflammatory.
