As a softwood, it is easier to machine/cut/sand than hardwoods and can look quite nice with just an application of clear finish (although it will darken in colour over time). Furniture made with pine has a rustic look if it contains knots and is often used for bedroom furniture. However, it is more susceptible to damage such as denting or gouging than hardwoods are and usually requires pre-treatment to when staining in order to produce acceptable results.
