What is the difference between pneumatic and hydraulic brakes?

Pneumatic brakes use compressed air to operate the braking
mechanism at the wheels. Hydraulic brakes use an oily liquid called
brake fluid to transfer pressure from a master cylinder to braking
cylinders at the wheels. Pneumatic brakes ("air brakes") are most
often used in heavy equipment such as busses and cargo trucks,
while hydraulic brakes are more likely to be used in autombiles,
vans, SUVs and light "pickup" trucks.
