Rice has been grown in China for thousands of years, and was commonly eaten throughout history there as a primary food (as many farmers grew it so it was abundant) and could be added or used to make other dishes with, too.
In most Eastern Asian countries, rice is the main source of food/energy. Since rice thrives in rainy areas, a tropical area such as Eastern Asia would most likely be cultivating rice. For that reason, rice is commonly eaten within the nearby areas -in this case China. Just as peached are grown and eaten in Florida, oil is used for gas in Iraq, and Hollister brand clothing is made in California, rice is grown there so they will use. *Also, coming from an Asian, I've developed a particular habit of eating rice with almost every meal. ^^
