In Britain, (notorious for wet weather) slates are used to cover the rooves of houses to keep out the rain. Slate is impervious to water, though nowadays, composite materials may be used instead, being lighter in weight than traditional slate. Some houses may be roofed with clay tiles - but, in my opinion, you can't beat Welsh slate!
